چکیده
Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) is routinely used test to monitor long term glycaemic control in diabetic patients. It is well known that genetic variants and chemically modified derivatives of haemoglobin can profoundly affect the accuracy of HbA1c measurements. The degree of interference depends on the HbA1c assay method, type & quantum of haemoglobin variant present in a given sample. Here, we report a rare case showing disproportionately high HbA1c value in a 69 years old female patient with carcinoma breast (adenocarcinoma) with hypertension.

We readwith great interest the article by Hardikar et al. (1). In their epidemiological study in nondiabetic subjects, the authors observed an inverse association between HbA1c and hemoglobin levels, mean cell volume, andmean cell hemoglobin. In the multivariate models, laboratory parameters indicating iron deficiency anemia were negatively associated with HbA1c. On the basis of their study, Ha...

Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) level is a commonly used laboratory investigation in diabetes patients, which reflects glycemic control over a period of 3 months. In various instances, HbA1C levels may be falsely low leading to suboptimal management of diabetes. One such example is the use of dapsone, which is an antibiotic, commonly used to treat various conditions such as leprosy, acne, ulcer...
متن کاملCommon hemoglobin variants in southern Taiwan and their effect on the determination of HbA1c by ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography.
BACKGROUND Patients with hemoglobin (Hb) variants may produce false HbA1c measurement. This study aimed to detect the common Hb variants in southern Taiwan and to evaluate their effect on the determination of HbA1c. METHODS A total of 1,434 samples collected for HbA1c measurement at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in southern Taiwan in March 2008 were submitted for Hb variant analysis by ...

We are grateful to Schindhelm et al. (1) for their interest in our article. WemeasuredHbA1cduring followupof a birth cohort in the hope of substituting it for an oral glucose tolerance test. We found a discrepancy between the results of the oral glucose tolerance test (World Health Organization, 1999) and HbA1c (American Diabetes Association, 2009): A large number of individuals were classified...
متن کاملAssociation between the level of glycosylated hemoglobin and serum lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by defect in insulin secretion and action resulting in hyperglycemia. Diabetic patients have deranged body metabolisms particularly for lipids which may result in abnormal levels of serum levels of lipids. Methods: The aim of this study is to find any possible correlation between the the glycosylated hemoglobin and the...
